Some synthetic fabrics such as polyester, spandex, or faux leather may carry a light factory or chemical smell when first opened. This is typically due to dyes, plastic packaging, or long-distance shipment. The smell is usually not overwhelming, but it can be noticeable if you open the packaging in a small room. Denim items sometimes have a stronger scent, similar to new jeans from retail stores, but occasionally slightly sharper because of the dye used. Faux leather items such as jackets, skirts, or bags often carry the most noticeable factory smell, which can linger for a day or two. However, the good news is that almost all these smells disappear quickly after washing or airing the clothes out. A simple wash cycle is usually end.
